Naturopathic medicine is a distinct form of primary health care that combines the most relevant and recent scientific research with time-tested and honored traditional remedies. Using various natural modalities allows Naturopathic doctors (ND's) the flexibility of treating each person as an individual, with customized treatment plans that treat the root cause of disease and not merely masking symptoms. Naturopathic medicine takes a safe, gentle and effective approach to supporting the bodies own unique ability to heal.

After a thorough assessment, our Naturopathic Doctor will prepare a customized treatment plan that may include clinical nutrition, lifestyle counseling, proper supplementation (vitamins, minerals or herbs) and other modalities that may be required for your specific concerns (see our list of services for descriptions of individual modalities).

Naturopathic doctors receive extensive medical training in physical examination and diagnostic techniques, and are licensed in Ontario to do so. You will receive a full screening physical and urinalysis on site, all recent blood work will be reviewed and additional lab work may be referred on an individual basis. A thorough Medical History intake will be performed and used to help determine the best individualized treatment plan for the client. In addition, we may use a Chinese diagnosis (based on symptoms, tongue appearance and pulses) to help guide the treatment plan. At Vitality for Life we practice integrative medicine, and believe that it is advantageous for the client to have all their health-care practitioners working together towards the goals of the client.

Your body is exposed to toxins everyday – from the environment, the foods we eat, exogenous hormones, house-hold cleaners, pesticides etc. They can over-burden the organs of elimination, be stored in body fat and trigger certain disease processes. Your Naturopathic doctor can help you optimize your body’s natural ability to eliminate toxic waste and build-up, which tends to have a negative impact on your health. We tailor a detoxification program suitable to your needs and lifestyle.

Dr. Anna is a mother and understands the concern parents feel when their children are ill. Naturopathic medicine is a wonderfully gentle approach to treating most childhood infections and chronic illnesses. After a thorough assessment of your child’s health, Dr. Anna may recommend dietary modifications, botanical medicines, vitamin/mineral supplementation, or the use of homeopathic remedies. If you have a sick child, it is best to bring them in immediately so that treatment can be started in a timely fashion. If your child suffers from chronic or recurrent ear infections, tonsillitis, food allergies or a generally low immune system, naturopathic medicine can make a dramatic impact on your childs long-term health. We also offer the IgG food allergy test, which is a simple and gentle test for children’s food allergies, which often contribute to long-standing complaints such as asthma, skin rashes/eczema, ear infections and a compromised immune system. To book an appointment for your child, simply call our office and a one hour appointment will be booked for the initial assessment, which will include a complete history and physical examination.

This treatment involves alternating hot and cold water applications (full body or specific areas only) to stimulate circulation, boost immunity, aid digestion, invigorate, promote the natural healing reflex, and to assist the body’s own healing ability. This procedure may be done at our clinic, but patients can also be advised to continue at-home treatments to optimize results.

Botanical/Herbal medicine, or phytotherapy, uses plants in different forms to support the bodies innate ability to heal itself. It is one of the world’s oldest forms of medicine, and is still the most commonly used form of medicine today. Botanical tinctures can be mixed in a unique combination to address the specific health concerns of the individual in a holistic manner. Botanical standardized extracts can also be given in capsule form.

Developed in the 17th century by a German Physician named Samuel Hahnemann, homeopathy is thought by some to be the highest form of medicine, affecting not only the physical, but the mental, emotional and spiritual realms as well. Homeopathics are made from plant, animal or mineral substances diluted many times over, leaving virtually no trace of the original substance. When the correct remedy is given to an individual, it helps the body achieve optimal health on all levels.

Acupuncture is the use of very fine needles in various locations on the body. From a Chinese perspective, Acupuncture helps the bodies vital energy flow properly through the meridians, or channels, in the body. Blockages of these channels can lead to pain, imbalances or disease processes. Acupuncture has been the primary form of healthcare in China for over 2000 years.

From a Western perspective, Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the central nervous system to release chemicals into the muscles, brain and spinal cord. It also increases circulation to the treatment area, and the release of hormones such as endorphins and opioids. The release of these substances can decrease pain or the perception of pain, and can help the body to heal.

Chinese medicine is a complete medical system that has diagnosed, treated, and prevented illness for over twenty-three centuries. It is based on the balance of Yin and Yang. Harmony of this union means health, good weather, and good fortune, while disharmony leads to disease, disaster, and bad luck. The strategy of Chinese medicine is to restore harmony. Practitioners assess a person's health by feeling the pulsations at each wrist and by observing the color and form of the face, tongue, and body. This information is interpreted in the context of a patient's present and past complaints, work and living habits, physical environment, family health history, and emotional life.

Cupping has been practiced for thousands of years, and involves placing heated glass cups (which form a vacuum) over the skin (usually on the back or large muscle groups like the quads or hamstrings). It focuses on the movement of blood and lymph fluid, and the energy (chi) that flows through the body. Oriental medicine believes that pain is caused by ‘stagnation’ of these systems. It increases blood flow to the area, eases stress, aches & pains, and pulls ‘toxins’ out through the skin. It is a beneficial treatment for muscular pain (especially back pain from injury or stiffness), clearing congestion in the chest (ie. bronchitis), stress reduction, or part of a general whole-body cleanse (supporting a healthy diet).

Acupuncture is an effective way to remove fine lines and wrinkles from the face. It can reduce the signs of aging by revitalizing the skin and providing a more youthful look to the face. Cosmetic Acupuncture will also help to rejuvenate facial tissue by increasing circulation to the area, and stimulating collagen production, resulting in a healthy glowing complexion. It is based on the ancient principles of Chinese Medicine and has been used for over 3,000 years.

By inserting very fine, hair-thin, disposable needles into specific acupuncture points on the face, there is a rush of blood circulation. The skin becomes nourished, oxygenated and moisturized, from the inside out. When there is more circulation, the body produces more collagen and this, in turn, gives the skin more tightness and elasticity, helping to reduce and/or eliminate sagging skin, wrinkles, double chin, etc..
